We are running our diesel engine on waste vegetable oil (WVO) - basically vegetable oil that has been used for cooking. Apart from being cheaper than diesel, there are environmental benefits to using it. Technically using vegetable oil is carbon neutral, as the carbon used up during photosynthesis cancels out what is burned, however minimal amounts of CO2 will be produced in the conversion of WVO into straight vegetable oil. This is still a lot better for the environment than diesel, plus it is a renewable resource unlike diesel.
Unfortunately we can't pop down to the nearest Esso and get this stuff, its a long process, but its worth it. We need to get hold of over one thousand litres of WVO, so will be scouring the local chip shops, Chinese takeaways and restaurants to get as much as possible. We need to remove all of the remaining chips, fats and other unwanted stuff and produce a substance worthy of putting into the tank. This part of our preparation is still in the early stages of development, more news to follow.
